EURACTIV Fit for 55 debate

21 September 2021

CLIA supported a virtual debate organised by Euractiv on 21 September to discuss the EU Fit for 55 proposals and the importance of green maritime innovation.
Roxana Lesovici from the Cabinet of Transport Commissioner Adina-Iona Vălean opened the debate outlining how the Fit for 55 proposals set the way for Europe to make its transformative journey to climate neutrality.  Panellists addressed the need to develop new technologies and alternative fuels to achieve the EU’s ambitious climate goals. The importance of regulatory stability and predictability was discussed, as well as the challenge of securing fuel availability and bunker capacity.  Panellists also agreed on the need for a technology neutral approach.
Speakers from the European Commission also included Joaquim Nunes de Almeida, Director DG Grow who expressed the importance of dialogue and the need for a strong, agile industrial eco-system for a successful green transition.  Christophe Tytgat, Secretary General of SEA Europe, the association representing shipyards and maritime equipment, explained the significance of the cruise sector to the success of the European maritime industry, pointing out that pre-pandemic cruise ships represent 80% of the value of the order book in Europe.
Roxana Lesovici concluded her remarks summing up the challenge: “There is no turning back, and the task ahead is serious.”
